Fact #9
Giraffes are ruminants. This means that they have more than one stomach. In fact, giraffes have four stomachs, the extra stomachs assisting with digesting food.

Drinking is one of the most dangerous times for a giraffe. While it is getting a drink it cannot keep a look out for predators and is vulnerable to attack.
Fact #11
Male giraffes sometimes fight with their necks over female giraffes. This is called “necking”. The two giraffes stand side by side and one giraffe swings his head and neck, hitting his head against the other giraffe. Sometimes one giraffe is hit to the ground during a combat.
Fact #12
A giraffe's habitat is usually found in African savannas, grasslands or open woodlands.

Fact #13
The hair that makes up a giraffes tail is about 10 times thicker than the average strand of human hair.
Fact #14
Giraffes have a great sense of sight and smell and are able to run at speeds up to 35 miles per hour.

Fact #15
However, a baby giraffe in the wild is vulnerable because it has a shorter gait and is unable to keep up with the herd if a predator is detected. In the days and weeks following a birth, a mother giraffe will sometimes leave her baby hidden in tall grass for a few hours while she eats and roams.

Clash Royale review

Clash Royale review: my first freemium game - Reader’s Feature
A hesitant farther tries to play Clash Royale with his son, and comes to some surprising conclusions about free-to-play games.

It is clear I am not the target audience for this game and my aim in playing it was different to most people, so I want to be fair and point out immediately the positives of Clash Royale upfront. The presentation is very, very slick, although derivative, and what there is of the gameplay is surprisingly tense and enjoyable.

I also need to point out that I was biased before I even played it. I instinctively look down my nose at these silly little freemium games that are aimed at those dreadful ‘casual’ players who have sprung up everywhere and quite simply know no better, unlike me and my hand-picked collection of exquisite mid ‘90s strategy games that don’t work properly on modern computers.

So why did I end up playing Clash Royale at all, never mind reviewing it? The fact that GameCentral doesn’t have time to delve into these games, so I am filling a gap in my fave gaming site? The need to try a different genre of game for a change to freshen the gaming palate? Dowser, Jr. and his addicted mates nagging me every five minutes to play it and join their clan? Maybe a little of all the above. But ultimately, the last one.

I’m sure a lot of readers already know more about these games than me so I ask for patience, just like I asked dowser, Jr. for patience when it loaded up and I didn’t have a clue what was going on. Clash Royale is a Tower Defense game. Tower Defense? Is that a bit like… Rampart son? God I’m old. You are given a fantasy set of troops (ground, air, special) which you place in a simplistic arena and fight a timed battle against an opponent who has a similar but not identical set of troops.

Your troops attack the opponent’s three towers and try to destroy them and vice versa. Destroying more towers than them means you win. Drawing means you go into golden goal territory – next tower wins. Lose and… well, not a lot happens really. I quickly realised you have to watch your defence and have counter pieces ready to play to thwart enemy attacks rather than simply going with all out attacks.

In fact my troops managed to win a few tense battles against real world opponents and both times with about five seconds left on the clock – and my god, I nearly punched the air. Over the next few days I played quite a few more battles and that confirmed my first impressions; the battles themselves are short, tense, simplistic, and absorbing.

There are vague shades of the great games in there too. Command & Conquer was the most obvious one that came to mind, but there is even a nod to my fave type of games – strategy games like Civilization and Pharaoh, where you are constantly striving for slight advantages that make the difference to the overall battle.

But of course I soon realised that despite all the different types of troops that was it. There was no more sophistication to the gameplay. Mind you, did I expect anything else really? So I asked dowser, Jr. if I could now join his clan, so that I could go back to the care home I came from. But no. You can only join a clan at level 3. I am still only level 1.

How come? I just won a load of battles so my level must have gone up?

Actually – no Dad.

Why not?

You didn’t actually get any XP for winning any of those battles.

What?! Well, how do you get XP then?

By upgrading troops.

I’m confused. OK – how do I upgrade them?

Opening chests and getting enough cards so your troops level up. Get wrecked Dad!

Really? So how do I get more chests?

Well, either win battles or actually, Dad the game gives you them for free on a regular basis. You don’t have do anything. Just wait.

That didn’t sound like what I’ve heard about these freemium games. Something for nothing? I thought they were all about nothing for something. And yet as I looked in the online shop of the game I saw staring back at me the evil empire, the fully developed spirit-crushing freemium model that is surely wrecking my beloved hobby once and for all. So what was going on? It turns out Clash Royale is all about gameplay after all. But the name of game it really wants to play with you is called ‘the waiting game’.

I guess a lot (maybe all) freemium models must work this way, but having no experience I am happy to hear differently if my conclusion is wrong. The models success seems to depend on that all too human flaw we call impatience. I imagine the programmers must have an image in their head of their ideal consumer: young kids, modern children, glued to screens who have an absolute and utter inability to wait for anything at all in life – and will therefore get their parents, via nag power, to pay real money to short circuit all this dreadful real world waiting to progress in the game and level up.

After all, the chests they give you for free are basic ones; who knows what goodies await in the big shiny magical and very expensive chests in the shop.

What they perhaps haven’t calculated though is how well this waiting game fits my life. In fact, I must praise this game for fitting into my lifestyle far better than GTA V ever did. I have a wife, kids, dog, mortgage, job – the whole catastrophe. When Clash Royale tells me it’s three whole hours to wait before I can open that new chest (but you can pay to open it quicker) I say OK, I can wait. When it says eight hours to wait before I can open that special shiny chest (but you can pay to open it quicker) I say no problem I’ve got lots to do.

When it says next chest in 12 hours I say, ‘12 hours? That will fly past’. 12 hours is a heck of a long time in dowser, Jr.’s life. But it’s not a long time in mine.

So that now left me in a strange situation, one I couldn’t remember being in in a game. The gameplay, which I think I have justifiably praised, became redundant. There was no need to battle. There was no need to win and get another chest, because every few hours the game gave me a free chest to open anyway. So I got on with life and waited for the upgrade messages to appear on the status bar, telling me a chest was waiting for me to open and slowly and randomly enough of my characters levelled up to level 3.

Once this mighty barrier was reached I could finally join ‘da bosses’ clan and fulfil my parent-son bond once again. I know that isn’t the aim of many people who will play this game, but it was my aim.

I did also ask dowser, Jr. what were the benefits of joining the clan.

Well it means you can chat and stuff, he told me. Isn’t that great? We can chat online and stuff. That’s progress. Clash Royale and its ilk, that must be progress too. I must give it a score.

What else can I give it but… free out of ten (sorry).

According to a list that was released by scientists at the end of 2015, some behaviors may increase the risks of an early death.

It is generally known that a diet that lacks protein, an excessive consumption of alcohol or smoking can cause an untimely death. However, scientists have now included other factors that may also negatively affect our life expectancy, such as sitting for more than seven hours per day or sleeping more than is actually necessary.

Some scientists at the University of Sydney, Australia have analyzed these behavioral patterns and according to the data that they’ve obtained and published in the journal PLOS Medicine, the results are alarming.

A person who shows all the behaviors highlighted previously is five times more likely to die earlier in a period of six years than someone who is leading a healthier life without engaging in any of these excessive habits.

Sitting for a long time, hardly any exercise and sleeping for more than nine hours a day could pretty much be considered fatal. According to the scientists, this kind of behavior is responsible for almost one third of deaths that have been analyzed in the study.

More than 230,000 people at the age of 45 years have participated in this study over a period of six years.

"In order to examine specific patterns of lifestyle and risk behavior, 96 variables were established representing all the possible combinations of smoking, consuming too much alcohol, lack of exercise, unbalanced diet, sleep deprivation and excessive sleeping as well as too many hours of sitting around.”, stated Dr. Melody Ding of the University of Sydney.

"Excessive sleep periods and sleep deprivation were separated into two different risk factors, for their connection to mortality can be explained by different mechanisms. The analysis included and examined four risk factors that were already known as well as two that were completely new: Sitting around for an excessive period and too much sleep. "

This new study was published after US researchers had warned the public about the dangers of spending too much time in front of the television. This habit is related to the eight major causes of death in the United States, such as cancer, hepatitis and Parkinson's.

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Michigan found that people who watch more than 3 hours of television a day, are not only at a higher risk of suffering from cancer or heart problems - commonly associated with a sedentary lifestyle - but are also more likely to develop diabetes, pneumonia, Parkinson's disease or hepatitis.
Moreover, people who show these behavioral patterns are 15% more likely to die from common complications than a person who spends less than an hour in front of the TV.

At the beginning of 2015, the University of Cambridge warned the population of the dangers of sleeping more than eight hours a day. The scientists discovered that excessive sleep could double the chances of having a stroke.

What is still unclear though, is whether the people that participated in the study were sleeping more because they were already sick or if the extra hours of sleep had a negative impact on their body.

The sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley, however, ensures that too much sleep can be harmful, especially if someone tries to catch up on last night’s sleep. He believes that one has to find the perfect balance.

Even though excessive sleep alone is not the biggest concern, it still hinders us from leading a healthy life. It makes it difficult to keep track of sport activities during the day and to manage a healthy diet.

Most Addictive Android Games of 2016

Here are the best Android games making you addictive immediately. Get it!!
Alto’s Adventure

Alto’s Adventure is about rescuing runaway llamas by skiing down a snowy slope. The goal is to collect as many llamas as possible and stay on your skis. You’ve probably played “endless runner” games before, but this is an “endless skier.” Tap to jump over rocks and obstacles, or to hop up and grind on rooftops. Get big air and do a flip, but don’t land on your head. Besides being addictive, Alto’s Adventure is also stunningly beautiful.

Big Hunter

In “Big Hunter” you have to hunt down mighty mammoths to feed your starving tribe. Each day brings new challenges to the hunt. Hitting the mammoth with a spear requires a combination of power and accuracy. Throwing a spear is basically the same as slinging an Angry Bird. Just pull back and aim. But the mammoth isn’t going to sit there and let you hit him. He’s very mad and charging right at you.

Burger – The Game

Burger – The Game is a title that’s less about food and more about physics. All you have to do is stack as many burger patties on top of a bun as you can before it topples over. You do this by flinging patties with a skillet. Tap once to drop a patty on the skillet. Tap a second time to fling the patty in the air and (hopefully) squarely on the bun. You can unlock different types of patties, but the gameplay stays the same.

Dashy Knight

Dashy Knight is the perfect combination of addictive gameplay, simple controls, and nostalgic graphics. You play as an 8-bit knight constantly running across the screen. There are castle towers and archers in your path. To avoid and destroy these obstacles you have two options: jump or dash. Timing is key as one false move could be certain death. Survive as long as possible to get a high score.

Diep.io

Last year, a game called Agar.io was one of the most popular mobile titles. Diep.io is made by the same people and it has a lot of the same ideas. This game puts you in control of a tank instead of a blob. Destroy enemies and blocks to level up and improve your tanks weapons and abilities. If you play your cards right you could find yourself atop the leaderboard.

Dots & Co

Dots & Co is another dots-based game from the people who made Dots and Two Dots. The gameplay in Dots & Co is largely the same as previous Dots games, which means it’s just as addictive. The game slowly introduces more concepts as you play. One of the new features in Dots & Co is “Companions.” These characters have special powers that can help you solve levels. The variety of levels and different environments keep things fresh.

iTrousers

iTrousers is definitely the silliest game on this list. It’s a little like the game QWOP, but you don’t control the thighs and calves independently. Instead, you program each leg like you’re building a robot, adjusting things like foot angle and step force. These presets are then used to navigate the trousers, step by step, through obstacles. The goal is to walk as far as possible.

Mekorama

Mekorama is easiest described as a mix between Monument Valley and Minecraft. It has the 3D puzzles of Monument Valley, but with the design and creation tools of Minecraft. You can move the camera around to change your perspective, which is necessary to solve the puzzles. The goal is to get your tiny robot to the portal, but to do so you’ll be tasked with finding your way through multiple obstacles.

In our list of the best free Android games, we look at the some of the Play Store's most impressive free-to-play titles across a number of genres. The games are sorted by category to make it easy to find the type of games you're looking for. Head to the best free Android strategy games section to see our latest picks.

Best free Android strategy games
Subterfuge

Subterfuge is one of the best multiplayer gaming experiences you can get. It's challenging, it's nerve-wracking, and it's perfectly suited to smartphones.

Subterfuge is a strategy title where each game takes place over the course of a week. You are charged with taking control of the ocean using a fleet of submarines: the more outposts and factories you control, the more submarines you can generate, which means more firepower to seize further outposts. It's a familiar setup, but because the events take place in real time there is a constant threat that opponents could be sending submarines toward your bases even while you sleep.

It's a race to see which player can generate enough 'Neptunium' (one of the game's resources) first and, to succeed, your diplomacy skills and interactions with other players are as important as your tactical prowess. Don't miss it.

Clash Royale

Clash Royale comes from the creators of the ever-popular Clash of Clans, and it's sure to steal more hours from your life. It plays something like a cross between a MOBA and a tower-defense title, and it's a highly addictive concept.
In Clash Royale, you take part in one-on-one battles with other players from around the world. You must throw down troops to destroy three of your opponents towers before they do the same to you. However, these towers are only accessible via two lanes which your army must travel along.

The majority of Clash Royale's gameplay revolves around trying to use resources effectively. Each creature has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, so it's your job to pick the right guys for the job and make sure your opponent doesn't outmatch you.

Vainglory

This multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) is as good to play as it is to look at, and while there are the inevitable in-app purchases, the core game is free to play. The game makes it across to Android after a successful run on iOS, and if there's a better developer name than Super Evil Megacorp, we'd love to know what it is.

Best free Android FPS and third-person shooter games
Dead Effect 2

It may not be wholly original or game-changing, but Dead Effect 2 brings the polish and shine of console first player shooters to Android. Wander around a space station that's riddled with the undead and test your problem-solving skills as you try valiantly to survive.

What really makes this game worthy of inclusion on our list is the graphics. They are simply stunning. If your device is up to the challenge, there's no way you won't be impressed the visuals that Dead Effect 2 has on offer. The controls and mechanics can be customized, so be sure to check out the options for doing that if they feel a little lightweight or clumsy to you.

Dead Trigger 2

Following the success of their first game, MadFinger Games released Dead Trigger 2, which is so zombielicious you’ll be asking for more blood and guts after just a few minutes of playing. You must travel through various undead-infested areas of the world, killing as many zombies with your jam-packed artillery of weapons. It’s positively disgusting, and that’s why we love it.

Hopeless: The Dark Cave

Horror, comedy and cuteness combine to great effect in this shooter about a small group of incandescent blobs in the middle of a dark cave, trying to fight off an endless horde of dark-dwelling monstrosities.

There is no end to the game as such, you just collect coins to upgrade your weapons arsenal for the next go, and do your best to keep the cute little fellas alive. The game is not for the faint-hearted because watching the brave blobs get swallowed up one-by-one by the darkness can be heart-rending.

SHADOWGUN: DeadZone

SHADOWGUN is the best multi-player shooter on Android, and will push powerful Android devices to the limit because of its demanding graphics. There are several classic shooter modes, including Deathmatch, and the Battlefield-style Zone Control. There is also an easy-to-use multiplayer voice chat, to help you better coordinate your team – or yell insults at your enemy.

Best free Android puzzle games
Atomas

Give hydrogen the Midas touch with this captivating little puzzler. Simplicity is often best when it comes to puzzle games, and Atomas works on this very simple foundation. You start with some measly hydrogen, and use plus and minus atoms to turn it into helium, then lithium and so on, until you end up with some of those good old precious metals like silver and gold.

It's easy enough to start out with, but it will soon having you Googling the periodic table in a bid to learn where best to place your atoms to trigger the most satisfying chain reactions.

Angry Birds 2

After what seems like endless variations on the original, Roxio is back with a whole new iteration of Angry Birds. The game itself is free, but it's attracted some controversy over its approach to in-app purchases: while some reviews say the game is a hoot even in its free incarnation, others say that Roxio is more interested in making you pay than having you play. We'd love to know what you think.

Plants vs Zombies 2

Sequel to one of the most successful free-to-play games ever, EA’s Plants vs Zombies 2 retains the spirit of the original while adding more zombies, plants and power ups. This colorful tower defense game will suck up a lot of your time (and potentially money, if you want to make use of its in-app purchases), but you are guaranteed fun along the way.

Wire Defuser

Many puzzle games on Android are of the therapeutic variety; take your time solving a puzzle while everything in game patiently waits for you. You can forget about all that in Wire Defuser, a tense, time-limited puzzle game in which you must dispose of bombs before they blow.

There are more than 80 levels in the game, and once you've conquered it you can unlock a hardcore mode. It's well presented too, with the bomb dials and knobs looking like something straight out of 80s action movies.

ZigZag

Puzzle games that look like they belong on trendy design websites have been pretty commonplace since the fantastic Monument Valley, and ZigZag is the latest to jump on the bandwagon.

Despite its looks, ZigZag is more of a reflex-based game than a puzzler; you guide a ball along thin zig-zagging paths and have to time your taps right to stop it falling off the edge. It's a simple, great-looking game for those quick-fix sessions.

Chronos - Oculus Rift's first great RPG

Chronos - Oculus Rift's first great RPG

Chronos is an Oculus Rift exclusive that depends more on solid, traditional gameplay than experimenting with virtual reality to put new twists on an action RPG. To survive, you need to excel at patient, calculated combat with major consequences littered between multi-faceted, Zelda-style puzzles. And while it could comfortably exist without VR, there’s nothing quite like a front-row seat to a giant cyclops fight, and that new perspective gives Chronos another edge.

It’s not a unique formula – kill the guards, then kill the boss – but there are hours of wonderment in getting lost in the sprawling dungeons that all present their own intricate maze of locked doors, curious runes, and even inter-dimensional travel. Each of the uniquely designed labyrinths requires careful memorizing and retracing, and things that make no sense initially all end up being satisfying pieces of one giant puzzle. Chronos carefully pieces together its different dimensions, requiring items from one to be brought into the next, which provides a constant alluring mystery: in what bizarre dimension will I need to use that small bag with the nonsensical description? And for what purpose?
Where the clever puzzle-based dungeons are very Zelda-inspired, the combat has the sword-and-shield charm of Dark Souls. I approached almost every enemy encounter by watching and waiting for my time to strike, as enemy attack patterns are a worthwhile timing-based puzzle of their own. Dodging incoming attacks in a very precise window grants you an arcane damage boost that you’ll absolutely need, since even the most basic enemies can kill you in a few hits if you’re reckless. It gives the combat a rhythm that’s like a kind of addictive dance, and I couldn’t wait to improve at it.

Older and Wiser

And you have to improve at it, because if you don’t there are major consequences. It’s punishing in conventional ways, with infrequent spawn points and enemies that don’t stay dead, but the effects carry over into your next life. Each time you die in Chronos your character visibly ages by one year, which slowly alters your stats from a brute-force teen to an arcane-dependent adult. That adds an interesting forced evolution to the combat as you progress: you’re able to unlock a new skill every 10 years, so while dying and leaving the comfort of the stats you’ve intentionally built with every level-up is daunting, your capabilities increase to compensate in other ways.

Chronos - Oculus Rift's first great RPG

Most of the RPG elements are unfortunately slim, though. The only loot enemies drop is one of two components you need to level up your weapons, and the process is the same for every weapon. There’s a very small amount of those, too – the handful of weapons and shields you’ll stumble across do vary in speed and damage, but, for what might be the first time ever in an RPG, I ended the story with the exact same Iron Sword that I started with. The leveling system is equally lackluster, with separate XP-based level-ups allowing you to assign points to one of four attributes that never really seemed to make a difference. My stat-leveling choices were usually a shot in the dark, yet they always ended in success, which leads me to believe these decisions were never that important.

The Walls Have Eyes

A separate issue is the way you view the action. Your face is the camera, so you have great control over how you look around, but because your viewpoint is fixed for each room you enter (like in old-school Resident Evil) rather than the usual over-the-shoulder perspective, it can present some uncomfortable neck-craning as you try to focus on the object or enemy that demands your attention.

For the most part, though, Chronos uses the fixed camera creatively, rather than as a limitation. One of the most intense moments of dread I’ve felt playing any game was encountering statues that only move when they’re out of frame, and will kill you in one hit if they get too close. Through the Oculus Rift’s directional audio, you can hear the scraping of stone that signals their approach, but unless you physically look to the left or right to find them, there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop that terrifying oncoming threat.

Outside of those mechanics, Chronos is benefitted by the inflated sense of scale of VR. I caught myself stopping to stare at the uniquely designed, awe-inspiring sights each different dimension offers – whether it was the impossibly large, Egyptian-looking statues or skyscraper-sized redwood trees that loom above your head. Chronos’ environmental variety and consistent art style would still be impressive outside of VR, but wearing the Oculus Rift really helps to make everything feel absolutely enormous compared to your tiny character (and the fixed cameras probably help here, too). Sometimes you’ll fight an enemy particularly close to the fixed point, and that never stops feeling unsettling in VR - it’s like you’re only an arm's length away from a murderous demon.

On the topic of murderous demons, Chronos’ story isn’t its strongest part, but it’s certainly not bad either. There’s a solid plot twist at the end that left me with some lingering questions, but it’s more of a respectable attempt that narrowly avoids taking itself too seriously without having the depth to back it up.

The Verdict

Chronos is a challenging, calculated adventure through intricate dungeons and relentless enemies that demand your best attention. Where it falls short as an RPG, Chronos redeems itself by offering beautiful environments and a sense of scale that probably can’t exist without virtual reality. It’d be worth playing regardless of the hardware it’s tied to, but the sense of presence the Oculus Rift allows you to have inside of Chronos’ varied dimensions is something I definitely recommend you feel for yourself.

Dark Souls 3 (III) and quick review

Dark Souls 3 is an interesting action role-playing video game published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for Microsoft Windows (PC), Xbox One, PS4 (PlayStation 4). It was released worldwide just few hours ago. Its previous entries, Dark Souls 1 and Dark Souls 2 received lots of positive reviews as well as common praise to the visuals and combat mechanics upon its release. This video game came out in Japan late last month (release date on March 24, 2016), where the PS4 version sold over 200,000 copies in its first two weeks of release. So there were lots of things that players expected in this latest series. And as this much-anticipated new game of Dark Souls III lands today, let’s see some first reviews and receptions.

First, let’s check out a quick plot recap on Dark Souls I and II: the action is set in the Kingdom of Lothric, where an undead warrior known as the Ashen One (that’s you) is applied to avert an oncoming apocalypse brought about by the endless conflict between Light and Dark. The only way to avert this event is with the destruction of the Lords of Cinder, previous heroes who have linked the First Flame across the ages.
Chloi Rad of IGN awarded Dark Souls 3 a 9.5 out of 10 and stating that “If Dark Souls 3 truly is the last in the series as we know it, then it’s a worthy send-off”.

Rich Stanton of Eurogamer also rated this game as "essential". He also added "Dark Souls 3 is a fabulous game" and was “a fitting conclusion” to the series.

Steven Strom of Ars Technica wrote that he thought the title still had the “smooth and impressive rendering of the series' signature style” and some of “the best boss fights in any Souls game”.

Erik Kain on Forbes.com also said that this game is wonderful, it does everything really well. It is also the best looking Souls game hands-down. He also added that Dark Souls 3 was built with detailed care and attention and all systems work flawlessly. The music is gorgeous throughout.

So what are you waiting for? Let’s get your hands on a harsh fight against enemies in Dark Souls 3
